This week was a challenge. I was short-staffed, covering people on leave and learning new processes. Self care was critical to getting through without needing leave myself.

So I decided to ignore the responsible adult voice in my head and do what made me happier in the moment.

Self care tip: Unread messages can wait

This week, I left work with unread emails (and felt a bit rebellious about it). Normally, I would stay late to at least glance through my inbox before calling it a day. However, I discovered that after closing my laptop on those pesky unread emails, nothing happened! I didn't feel behind or more stressed the next morning, and nothing urgent was missed.

Also, I left school 'early' (actually on time) to meet a friend for dinner. That was nice, but even better was having two spicy margaritas on a school night! I had a really fun catch-up with the friend who's just started at a new school. The margaritas meant we could laugh away the stress we were both feeling.

Lastly, what brought me a moment of joy amidst a day packed with meetings was choosing to overlook the leftovers I had brought from home. Instead, I indulged in brownies for lunch. By quieting the sensible voice in my head, I savored the sugary, unhealthy delight of homemade brownies. Enjoying them on my own, rather than sharing with colleagues as I had originally intended when baking them, made the experience even more indulgent.
