Synopsis: From the schools of ancient times to the present day, Gary Thomas looks at how and why education evolved as it has. By exploring some of the big questions, he examines the ways in which schools work, considers the differences around the world, and concludes by considering the future of education worldwide.

My opinion: It pretty much does what it says on the tin. I learned some interesting information about the history of education and how one industrial development or psychological theory led to another new pedagogy or educational structure. I wouldn't say it improved my practice as a teacher or manager, but it was informative and quick to read.

Other reviewers on GoodReads say that it's a good introduction, illuminating, useful bibliography, well-written and clear. Also, they say it's highly readable and really comprehensive.

Other books in the series (that I haven't read yet so make no guarantees about):

  • Negotiation: a very short introduction by Carrie Menkel-Meadow

  • Reading: a very short introduction by Belinda Jack

  • Identity: a very short introduction by Florian Coulmas

  • And many more
